2011 North Valley Reserve Pinot Noir

"Sourced from a handful of growers and six or seven sites, Soter’s 2011 Pinot Noir North Valley Reserve reflects what he terms “our commitment to source from all of the sub-appellations in order to fully represent the North Valley.” The first thing I notice vis-a-vis this bottling’s ostensibly lesser sibling is the caramel and vanilla as well as the very slightly drying influence from oak. To be sure, though, the sense of sweetness and fruit ripeness is enhanced in this bottling, and happily some of the same lovely floral allusions add allure. Elderberry and red currant retain an animated and invigorating hint of skin tartness and berry crunch, even if there is not quite the exuberant burst found in the finish of the “regular” bottling." "(made with 30% whole clusters; aged in 40% new oak): Vivid ruby-red. Spicy, smoke-tinged cherry and red berry scents show surprising depth and power for the vintage. Smoky black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors are lifted by a spicy element and show very good focus. Sappy, incisive and appealingly sweet on the finish, firmed by supple, well-knit tannins."
